Would this be weird for a college app essay?

I think that depends entirely on your execution: I personally don't see any obvious ties to a theme, but if you can make the connection persuasively, then it should stick out in the committee's minds in a good way. If you're not confident in your ability to pull it off, though, you might want to pick a particular experience to write about instead. Take a look at some of the Common App prompts and see if any of them suggest anything to you.
